Niger Delta: learning from Zarqawi?

Just back from a fascinating cocktail reception thrown by a private sector security analyst, where I got into a conversation with their in-house sub-Saharan Africa specialist. We discussed the prospects for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta insurgency in Nigeria.

'These guys watch BBC World like everybody else,' he informed me. 'They see what's happening in Iraq and learn from it.' Hence the kidnappings of a number of key oil industry personnel. His verdict? These are serious rebels, and there is a lot more to come.

UPDATE: Internet conspiracy mongers can go here and read how al Qa'eda is to blame for all of this anyway. Allegedly.
